Hawai'i Kona Kainaliu Farms Maragogype

This gigantic coffee looms large in size and in reputation, thanks to the near legendary status of coffee grown in Hawai'i. With many falsified versions of 'Kona' coffee on the market, you can rest assured this Maragogype micro-lot is not only 100% grown on the island, but just might be the best coffee ever produced from the beautiful state.
Expect notes of white peach and complex fruit, with a structured acidity, yielding a harmonic cup.

Story

Hawai'i just may be the most enigmatic coffee origin. With way, way more coffee on the market labeled as 100% Kona than the small island could ever produce, this has only added to the allure of coffee produced in Kona. After a few years of sampling, we hit on this small Maragogype lot produced by Kainaliu farms. We are thrilled to feature this coffee as an offering, and hope for many more seasons working with Kainaliu Farms.

Situated along the Mamalahoa Highway, Kainaliu is a small, unincorporated community located on the western side of the Big Island of Hawai'i. It is culturally significant due to the topography as well as the ancient trail system, which have made it a landmark amongst locals and tourists, as it has maintained historical sites located within the community. The Hualālai volcano influences the topography of this region, creating both elevation and microclimates ideal for growing coffee and other products. With the volcanic influence on the soil, (both modern and ancient, the last eruption was in 1801) many farms are located on the slopes, taking advantage of the concentrated nutrients in the soil. Kainaliu Farms are one of those that has taken to farming on the slopes of this volcano. As they initially were planting this farm, they intended to plant Typica high on the mountain to utilize the elevation and soil of the volcano. However, it was evident that once these trees began to grow, this Typica wasn't Typica at all as they towered high over the rest of the plantings. This Maragogype became a happy accident, yielding a tremendously unique cup profile, and processed by the intrepid hands at Kainaliu Farms.

Green Cost

The subject of paying for green coffee is inherently complicated. While the amount paid is very important, the payment terms and type of contract negotiated during the purchase are also paramount. Paying $5/lb of coffee can be a great price, but could be detrimental to a producer if the payment terms exceed that of their needs. Here we will dive into not only what was paid for the coffee, but how the coffee was purchased. There is a glossary of terms to be found below which will aid in your understanding of industry terms.

Farm Gate - This reflects what is paid to the producer of the coffee at the farm level. Oftentimes in terms of our relationship coffees, FOB is fairly close to the farm gate price, except for countries like Ethiopia and Kenya, when it is very difficult to trace back all the way to the producer.

FOB - Free on Board. This means that the seller is responsible for any overland fees that happen before the coffee is on board the ship. This is our most frequently listed green cost, as it is the most simple way to present what we pay a seller, but it does not reflect what the person growing the coffee was paid.

EXW- This most often reflects the 'spot' price that we paid for a coffee. All of the cost is paid by the importer, and more often than not the FOB price as well as the transport costs are unknown.
