Positions

Almost everyone that starts at Onyx begins by working in the cafes. We believe that everyone, regardless of experience, should start at the beginning. Over the years our pay structure has changed as we’ve grown and as wage standards in coffee have increased. We maintain a 6 month review and raise structure for baristas and hourly workers, and a yearly review and raise structure for salary employees. All full time staff members are offered full medical insurance paid for by Onyx.

Onyx Careers

Baristas

Baristas positions are in one of our four cafes in Northwest Arkansas. We are looking for individuals that are passionate about people, about learning, and about contributing to the positivity that coffee and service can spread. There’s no coffee experience required, we train and equip everyone with what they need. It can take up to a year to progress through all of the training modules.

Baristas are guaranteed to make $16/hr with wages and tips. Across the four locations baristas average $21.05/hr.

Barista Trainers

Coffee knowledge and skills are the core from which we express hospitality and the representation of the entire supply chain that comes before the cafe. Our barista trainers are amongst some of the highest achieving coffee professionals anywhere. They lead our team’s passion, knowledge acquisition, skillset development, and influence coffee preparation methodologies in the cafe. Trainers work with our internal team and also with wholesale customers. Trainers develop new menus, work flows, and participate in the broader leadership team. There are 4 full time training roles.

Trainers average $47,250 per year. Reviews and salary raises are given every 6 months and are based on performance. Benefits include paid time off, full health insurance coverage, options for dental and vision.

Cafe Managers

Cafe managers are the leaders of our hospitality and retail footprint. We are looking for people who want to lead our team to develop skills in coffee, work skills, and a love for people and service. They perform all cafe functions, in shop team member training, contribute to development of workflow, implement new menus, participate in the broader leadership team, develop new hospitality methodologies, give encouragement and feedback to the team, lead cafe work culture, and generally care for anything customer or shop related.

Cafe managers average $47,000 per year which includes salary, commissions, and bonuses. Reviews and salary raises are given every 6 months and are based on performance. Benefits include paid time off, full health insurance coverage, options for dental and vision.

Production

Production is the team that takes the roasted coffee and turns it into the packages you receive in the shop or in the mail. This team is the backbone of our coffee program, handling orders of all kinds with intention and detail. We are looking for team members who can work quickly and with precision, can lift more than 25lbs regularly, and who are interested in working on a great team. This is a behind the scenes and important role.

Production team members average $16/hr which includes commissions on wholesale orders.

Production Managers

Production Managers organize and execute all of the daily coffee orders for wholesale and for retail. They lead the team, conduct training, organize schedules and logistics, give encouragement and feedback. They also contribute to innovation in technology and efficiency in our production facility. Other duties include managing inventory, communication within the company and to external logistics partners, utilizing software for efficiencies, problem solving and execution of tasks. Production managers must be people oriented, detail focused, and able to lift 50lbs consistently. There are 3 full time production manager positions.

Production managers average $48,000 yearly. Reviews and salary raises are given every 6 months and are based on performance. Benefits include paid time off, full health insurance coverage, options for dental and vision.

Roasters

Roasting is our core passion at Onyx. We utilize every modern technology to produce the absolute best coffee that we can. Our roasters are incredibly talented and committed to the art and science that happens in roasting. Our roasters are trained to utilize the full scope of technology and sensory skills to consistently produce great coffees. Requirements are ability to consistently lift 50lbs, proficiency in sensory skillsets and cupping, desire to learn mechanical maintenance, detail oriented, interest in learning about green sourcing and processing, and participation in overall leadership. There are 5 full time roasting positions.

Roasters average $44,000 per year. Reviews and salary raises are given every 6 months and are based on performance. Benefits include paid time off, full health insurance coverage, options for dental and vision.

Ownership

Onyx is a family owned business that is owned, managed, and run by husband and wife team Jon and Andrea Allen. Andrea started working in coffee in 2002 as a barista, and fell in love with coffee and service. Jon joined her in 2003, and since then they’ve been working in the industry and growing in passion and knowledge.

Andrea Allen is the Chief People Officer, and works in all aspects of the business cultivating excellence through hospitably, service, and coffee preparation. She makes $90,000/year.

Jon Allen is the CEO, and directs and provides vision for the various aspects of the company as well as participating in QC and sourcing, creative direction and ideation, cafe and packaging design, and everything in between. He makes $90,000/year.
